 Tamil Nadu is known as "the land of temples" due to its abundance of Hindu temples, with more than 40,000 temples, many of which are at least 800 years old. 

These temples are found scattered all over the state, and were constructed by rulers of various dynasties over centuries [\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_temples_in_Tamil_Nadu). 

Tamil Nadu is home to some of the most famous and popular temples in India, such as the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam [\[2\]](https://www.tourmyindia.com/blog/famous-temples-in-tamil-nadu/). 

In addition to these well-known temples, Tamil Nadu also has many ancient and grand temples, such as the Chitragupta Swamy Temple in Kanchipuram, which was built during the Chola Dynasty [\[3\]](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/web-stories/ancient-temples-of-tamil-nadu/photostory/83001247.cms). 

Some of these temples, such as Thanjai Periya Kovil, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites [\[4\]](https://tourismtn.com/temples-in-tamilnadu/).
